Schools sought for teacher retention trials

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has launched two initiatives focused on improving teacher retention.

The first is funded through a partnership between the EEF and the Wellcome Trust and will test different ways of improving the retention of science teachers, who are more likely to leave the profession within their first five years.

Around 300 secondary schools will take part in a trial of KEEP Teaching, a programme run by the Institute of Physics that identifies the key factors to can help physics graduates’ transition through their NQT year.

The second trial will see the EEF supporting the introduction of the Department for Education’s proposed new Early Career Framework (ECF). From 2020/21, the ECF will extend the induction period for NQTs to two years and provide funding for increased CPD, time off-timetable and mentoring.
