Are you teaching them to be happy?

Building wellbeing is part and parcel of schools’ business, says Anna Feuchtwang

Did you learn how to be happy in school? This might seem a curious questions to pose but happiness should be a concern for educators. After all, happiness is one end of the mental health spectrum and alongside their front-line role in supporting students in acute need of specialist mental health support, schools also have a preventative role to play: teaching happiness if you like.

This was one of the issues raised by researchers at the Growing Up Happy conference organised by the Children’s Policy Research Unit. The aim was to share evidence of which approaches in improving pupil mental health and wellbeing produce the best results.
