At the chalkface: I love the poorly educated

We are beginning to have the same extremes. Rich and poor, White Flight, schools based on racial or religious lines, social immobility, a shocking level of illiteracy, and the deliberate creation of an underclass. Welcome to the USA.

I have seen the future of education – its name is Donald Trump.

“I love the poorly educated,” he famously yelled on his campaign trail, in his best snake oil and Machiavellian way. Of course you do, Donald. You’re passionate about ignorance and the causes of ignorance. You like lying and deceit. So did Trump University. Here one could get a PhD in daylight robbery, until it was shut down in a blizzard of lawsuits. No matter. It is the future of education. We may think the English education system superior but we already embrace Trump-lite, the American way.

These thoughts were prompted by a recent visit to see my daughter in New York City. Its sheer energy, obscene wealth and killing poverty left me quite discombobulated. It reminded me of London, especially its education model.
