Brexit: Schools remain our beacons of unity

As hate crime incidents continue at high levels, recent violent assaults have brought home the crisis that our country faces. In the face of political inaction, our schools must become our beacons of hope and unity, says SecEd editor Pete Henshaw

The images released by the mother of 10-year-old Awais Ali of her son’s injuries after he was the victim of an alleged racist attack will have disturbed all right-minded people in this country (http://bit.ly/2bVIYBX).

This incident is another in an increasing number of violent assaults – coming not long after a Polish man was killed in Essex in what also seems to be a racially motivated attack.

Of course, while we won’t know the full reasons behind these attacks until justice runs its course, it does not seem unreasonable to discuss these incidents in the context of the huge spike in hate crime that we continue to see in the aftermath of the June 23 Brexit vote.
