Diary of a headteacher: A leadership restructure

Despite its successful outcome, a long-thought-about leadership restructure has brought our headteacher diarist some challenges to deal with

I have been thinking a lot about the leadership structure in my school – whether it is fit-for-purpose and whether I have the right people in the right roles.

Following a tremendous amount of thought and consideration, I have embarked on completely restructuring the middle layer of leadership in the school. This is a bold move, it has certainly ruffled more than a few feathers and caused significant unrest and displeasure in certain quarters. But I had to do it, there was no other option available.

I’ve heard the phrase “getting the right people on the bus” frequently in educational leadership and I definitely recognise the need to place the best leaders with the right attitudes in the most important roles in a school.
