Diary of a headteacher: A lonely job?

Headship can be a lonely place, we are told. Our diarist has found that assembling the right team around him has made all the difference

Many people will tell you that headship can be a lonely place. It’s a saying that gets rolled out during NPQH training sessions and it is something I have heard many times.

In fact, many experienced headteachers have said it to me, and usually immediately afterwards they say: “Pick the phone up anytime if you need to talk.”

When you hear something from headteacher colleagues who are experienced, who you respect and who have clocked up many successful years, you sit up and listen.

I have learned that it is important to have these contacts as a headteacher – individuals who you can call or call in on to talk situations through, ask their advice and vent your frustrations.
