Parental complaints seem to have increased, but it is vital that responsibility for results rests with students as well as teachers, says our headteacher diarist

Ever since entering senior leadership I have become acutely aware that I will have to deal with my fair share of parental complaints. Even in the most outstanding school there are complaints generated for a variety of reasons.

Parents, one would hope, will initially address their query or concern directly to the member of staff with whom they have an issue. However, for a number of reasons they might skip this stage and contact the head of department to explain their concern, and quite often if they do not receive a satisfactory response, the problem then might get passed up the line to an assistant head.
