Diary of a headteacher: Which type of leader are you?

With research revealing and describing the five most common types of headteacher, our diarist cannot help but categorise his own leadership style...

My eye was caught recently by a new piece of research into headteacher “types”. Researchers had access to 160 secondary school academies in England which enabled them to gather information on more than 400 different headteachers and how they operated.

The research, by Alex Hill, Liz Mellon, Ben Laker and Jules Goddard, is being published in the Harvard Business Review. Their work found that heads tended to fall into one of five “types”:

The first group are called “Philosophers” and this is the largest group. These are leaders, not managers and lead by example as senior teachers. They are inspirers, who like to talk about pedagogy, in particular. They do not change much about the student body or the staffroom.
