Diary of an NQT: My NQT hopes and ambitions

SecEd’s NQT Diary returns for a new year with a new diarist at the helm. He considers here his hopes for the weeks and months ahead

Having completed my ITT course in May, I began my first full-time teaching post in June, seven weeks prior to the end of the academic year.

I was lucky to secure a job that started before the summer holidays, allowing me to establish myself as a member of staff, and also become familiar with the school’s systems and procedures before term started again this September. As any teacher will know, starting at a new school can be a thoroughly disorientating experience, and so beginning my post towards the end of the summer term was invaluable.

My specialist subject is history, although I will also be teaching classes in geography, PSHE and English during my NQT year. It is common for educators to teach outside their specialism, and it is expected that NQTs will be able to deliver lessons in a number of subjects.
