Supporting long-term medical conditions in school

Anna Feuchtwang explores the school nurse’s role in supporting pupils with medical conditions to play a full part in school life

Long-term health conditions are a significant concern for many young people and their families. The recent findings from the Heath Behaviour in School Aged Children study in England found that 15 per cent of school students aged 11 to 15 reported having been diagnosed with a long-term illness, disability or medical condition.

As well as potentially having a negative impact on their educational outcomes, long-term medical conditions can also affect young people’s social behaviour at school.

As such, schools need to put in place age-appropriate treatment, care and support.
School nurses are perfectly placed to coordinate these efforts. However, it appears that the role of school nurses is not fully understood by pupils or families, and so pupils aren’t always able to benefit from the support school nurses are able to offer.
