The government's abuses of power

The UK now ranks alongside Russia on the Global Rights Index. Chris Keates describes the government’s shameful abuse of legislative power

Since 2010, the attacks on our welfare state, our public services, on democracy and on our rights and freedoms have been sustained and brutal.

As a result of legislation enacted by the Conservative-led coalition government, this country now, shamefully, ranks alongside Russia, Georgia and Iran on the International Trade Union Confederation’s Global Rights Index, which rates countries on a range of standards of fundamental rights, including violations of international law, civil liberties, the right to strike, collective bargaining and freedom of association.

Yet the attacks are set to continue. The government’s latest legislative programme will, if enacted, have even more far-reaching consequences.
