We must not break the vital school-local authority support link

With 7,000 children missing from education, the move to further weaken local authority-school links is dangerous, fears Anna Feuchtwang

Two announcements in the Spending Review last term may have worrying implications for children and the services they use. First, the Education Services Grant, which goes to local authorities to provide education welfare, health-related and other services that support children in their learning, will be cut by £600 million over the next five years. Second, the government is determined to reduce the role that local authorities play in running schools.

For the most vulnerable children who often have least access to educational opportunities, these two announcements could have profound affects.

Children in care, children who would benefit from early intervention, children whose home lives are chaotic and unstable are the ones most likely to drop out of school and go missing from education.
