The early learning goals (ELGs) are being revised, with the proposed changes due out imminently. The final changes will then be reflected in a revised EYFS Profile and the newly announced Reception Baseline Assessment.

If we take a considered view of recent evidence there is clearly a case for some revision of the ELGs, particularly in relation to Communication, Language and Literacy. In addition, the evidence for sustaining a play-based pedagogic approach throughout the EYFS, and to some extent into Year 1, is strengthened – evidence that has been submitted to the Government as part of the review process.
