Health and Safety Solutions North West is currently fine-tuning a new range of courses to help nurseries successfully implement the revised EYFS and meet the Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements. These courses have been devised after discussion with local authorities and local nurseries to identify any gaps in knowledge.
Supporting Vulnerable Children in Childcare Settings will be of particular interest to private providers offering the free entitlement for two-year-olds.
Rachel Buckler, managing director, Health and Safety Solutions (NW) - Safeguarding Training, says, 'The course approaches the subject from a wide perspective and has been written by practitioners from the fields of education, health and social care in order to present a holistic approach that supports the needs of children in their most formative years. It will enable staff to gain a wider understanding of both children and parents who may experience complex needs and face significant challenges. It will certainly benefit settings that are in receipt of funded places for two-year-olds, where eligibility criteria comes into play.'
The course covers four areas:
- Factors that contribute to children's vulnerability
- Working with parents with complex needs
- How to implement aspects within the three prime areas of learning and development in support of vulnerable children
- Contributing to the two-year progress check.
Gaining a deeper understanding of a wide range of issues relating to vulnerable children is key to the effectiveness of this course.
Ms Buckler says, 'Vulnerable children may present concerns that sit within the child protection and safeguarding arena. Understanding these concerns and responding appropriately with Local Safeguarding Children Boards procedures is vital.
'(The course) addresses ways of interacting with parents of vulnerable children and suggests ways in which practitioners can build good relationships that enable parents to engage in their child's learning,' Ms Buckler adds.'
