Why do mealtimes matter?
It is evident that children are more likely to accept and even relish a wide variety of foods when mealtimes are fun. They are an opportunity for children to develop good eating behaviours, a time for social interaction, taking responsibilities and learning about food origins.
As role models, they are also a chance for parents and carers to involve children in planning, preparation and the assigning of small tasks. By doing this, we are helping them to learn and take responsibility.
Mealtimes also support the development of dining etiquette and appropriate use of cutlery by learning from the behaviours of others. Keeping in mind all of the benefits of positive mealtimes, they should not only be considered as necessary parts of our daily routines but as enjoyable, relaxed and light-hearted occasions.
Top tips for positive mealtimes
- Keep all distractions away from the table, so the time is purely a mealtime and a social event for everyone. Distractions include electronic devices such as mobile phones, the TV, laptops and tablets.
- Create a positive atmosphere by smiling, sharing the events of the day, involving children in conversation and offering praise when they try new foods or pass on any meals.
- Never rush children to finish their meals; let them enjoy them at their own pace. This helps to regulate their appetite.
- Be creative and make food fun for children. Involve them in planning meals and laying the table. Make them feel valued – the kings and queens of mealtimes!
- Creating a positive and calm mealtime environment can sometimes be a challenge, but a positive mealtime policy is always beneficial for the family as a whole.
