Emotional Development - Time to Reflect

Children whose emotional and behavioural needs have led to them struggling in early years settings are being helped by an intervention developed in Cornwall, which is starting to be recognised nationally.

More than 30 children around the county have benefited from Reflect, six sessions of support where a professional from Cornwall Council’s Early Years Inclusion Service (EYIS) helps a key practitioner to look closely at positive ways of working with the individual child to reduce stress and the negative effects of behaviour.

The intervention was in response to a noticeable increase in referrals to the EYIS for children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties and some children were at risk of exclusion from their pre-school settings. There had also been an increase in the number of children excluded from school during their Reception year.
