Community Playthings has developed a training resource, which demonstrates how to develop an indoor environment that supports child-initiated learning through play.
Called 'Enabling Play - Planning Environments', the CD-ROM builds on the organisation's booklets Spaces and Creating Places.
The pack contains a PowerPoint slideshow with images of settings and children, to illustrate important concepts.
Starting with thoughts about how we as adults are affected by our surroundings, the slideshow goes on to consider how much more children are influenced by their environment, then offers tips on how to measure and improve provision.
The resource is based on the premise that children learn through play and that, therefore, the environment must support play in concrete ways.
