This knowledge-based unit underlines the responsibilities placed on practitioners as it looks at the factors that can impact both positively and negatively on the outcomes and life chances of children and explains to learners how they can make a positive difference to the lives of those in their care.

'This unit is quite daunting,' says Vivette Eaton, quality control manager for the Childcare Company. 'However, it raises the profile of what childcare practitioners do. It is quite something to realise the responsibility you have - especially when you are quite young and just starting out in the sector. But it is exciting to realise that what you are doing is so very important.'
