For the second year running, Nursery World NORTH will be based at the iconic Manchester Central in 2020, once again providing an educational, inspiring and informative show that harnesses the power and enthusiasm of the early years workforce.
Over two days, Nursery World NORTH 2020 will offer expert support and guidance through seminars and masterclasses, access to the sector’s suppliers, products and services, opportunities to meet colleagues old and new, establish connections and grow networks, and the potential to find inspiration and ideas that will enhance practice.
After a successful launch in 2019, Nursery World NORTH will again be co-located with Tes SEN North to deliver the latest in special educational needs provision. Masterclass: How to be Outstanding in Ofsted’s ‘Quality of education’ judgement
Friday, 24 April 9.15am-12.15pm
The new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) requires early years settings to re-balance their priorities in their practice and provision.
In the masterclass, early years consultant Jan Dubiel will provide an overview of the three parts of the ‘Quality of education’ judgement: ‘Intent’, ‘Implementation’ and ‘Impact’, what they mean and how they interconnect. He will also discuss curriculum content, how the revised Development Matterswill help settings with curriculum planning, and key approaches and elements of pedagogy that underpin a broad, balanced and aspirational curriculum and ensure deep and effective learning.
Dr Jo Basford, senior lecturer in childhood, youth and education at Manchester Metropolitan University, will then introduce the idea of ‘cultural capital’, what it means in the lives of young children, and the implications for early years practice.
Finally, Penny Tassoni MBE, early years consultant and author, will provide practical guidance on implementing an early years curriculum that offers challenge and sequences children’s learning appropriate to their development, with a focus on the emotional and learning needs of individuals, the planning cycle, organisation of the learning environment, and scaffolding communication and language learning.
Seminars
On Friday, Judith Twani will lead a seminar on supporting and challenging mathematical learning; Di Chilvers will discuss the place of the Characteristics of Effective Learning in the new Ofsted framework and the revisions to the EYFS and Development Matters guidance; and Elaine White will provide an overview of key messages and lessons learned from early years inspections that have taken place under the EIF so far.
Alice Sharp’s seminar will focus on helping children develop their understanding of early STEM; ways of supporting multilingual children will be introduced by Julie Cigman; Anne O’Connor will discuss self-regulation; and Cath Larkin will lead a talk on Forest School.
On Saturday, 25 April, Penny Tassoni will examine why ‘core experiences’ can provide a basis for a rich and appropriate curriculum for the under-threes; and Jan Dubiel will provide an overview of teaching and learning in a time of big changes for the sector, with a new Ofsted framework and planned changes to the Early Learning Goals, Development Matters and assessment.
Anne O’Connor will discuss physical development in the context of continuous provision; Cath Larkin will lead a session on the EIF’s expectations of language skills; a seminar on working with families will be led by Sarah Mackenzie; and Mary Lestrange will look at supporting social and emotional development.
A seminar on promoting critical skills through malleable materials and a session on loose parts will be led by Alice Sharp and Julie Mountain respectively.
