'Use increasing control over an object, such as a ball, by touching, pushing, patting, throwing, catching or kicking it.'
Over the last few months we've been developing an EYFS database to track the progress of our children towards the Early Learning Goals. So far the results are promising, with greater visibility of each child's progress and a more consistent approach to their Learning Journals.
But when I hear of the DfE's plans for an EYFS League Table, a little alarm bell starts ringing. The similarities with football stats are quite striking. Every week, videos of Premier League football matches are analysed by a team of experts to show each player's contribution to the game. In total there are a couple of dozen actions to record, including passes, interceptions, corners, shots on goal, goals scored/saved etc. At the end of the season, every player in the League ends up with a profile of their overall performance. Sound familiar?
