Work Matters: Early Years - Professionals - Case studies

Careers & Training
Lindsay McGregor is on secondment at Edge Hill University in the Faculty of Education as an early years lecturer working on EYPS.

Here she explains how, while studying for her own EYP Status in 2007, she worked towards gathering evidence for Standards 8, 12 and 29, which all interlinked with her previous role as a play development worker.

Standard 8 requires candidates to show how they can lead and support others to establish and sustain a safe, welcoming, purposeful, stimulating and encouraging environment where children feel confident and secure and are able to develop and learn.

Standard 12 requires them to demonstrate how they can lead and support others to select, prepare and use a range of resources suitable for children's ages, interests and abilities, taking account of diversity and promoting equality and inclusion.

Standard 29 requires them to demonstrate how they can lead and support others to recognise and respect the influential and enduring contribution that families and parent/carers can make to children's development, well being and learning.

In my role as play development worker, l had to develop and co-ordinate a diverse range of sustainable, inclusive, play-based services to meet the needs of young children aged 0-5 years and their families.

In compiling the evidence for standard 8, l wrote about planning safe, welcoming environments and provided further photographic evidence of my play sessions.

For standard 12, l detailed the resources for creche design and planning and included before and after photographs. l managed the creche projects for the two children's centres, a local Sure Start centre and one outreach centre, providing a newspaper article as evidence along with further photos.

For standard 29 l demonstrated how l worked alongside the families and individual parent/carers and worked collaboratively with outside agencies. The evidence for this was provided by parent witness testimonies, minutes from meetings and photos of the parents/carers attending my play sessions.
