Standard 21 is 'Assess, record and report on progress in children's development and learning and use this as a basis for differentiating provision'.
Pat is a children's centre teacher and works closely with practitioners to raise quality in learning and development.
When considering standard 21, Pat offered training for a group of practitioners covering the themes of the EYFS and different types of observations. She gave them a copy of the EYFS and provided opportunities to discuss their previous experiences and practice. She emphasised the importance of using observations to inform planning, considering children's interests and individual needs.
Pat worked with the practitioners to devise an 'observation and children's interest pro-forma' and 'incidental observation form'. The planning included next steps for individual children and individual child profiles.
