One nursery chain is giving staff a stake in its success, and lifting motivation, through shared ownership, writes Karen Faux.

Shared ownership can be seen as an ideal business model for the early years sector, but the only company working towards being employee-owned is the 36-strong chain Child Base.

The South-East-based group employs a thousand people and has a turnover of £25m a year. One in four of its nurseries is rated outstanding by Ofsted, and earlier this year it recruited former Early Years Foundation Stage national director Ruth Pimentel to the position of non-executive director.

Staff satisfaction at Child Base is growing. It was ranked 90th in The Sunday Times' 100 Best Companies to Work For listing earlier this year, and was the only children's daycare provider featured.
