Nurseries and other small businesses have been thrown a possible lifeline for sorting out financial problems, as Karen Faux reports.

Last November HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) launched a dedicated Business Support Service designed to help those businesses worried about meeting tax, National Insurance and VAT payments in the immediate future.

HMRC staff will review a caller's circumstances and discuss temporary options tailored to their business needs. This could include arranging for payments to be made over a longer period without incurring any surcharges - although interest will continue to be payable on those taxes where it applies.

According to HMRC the service has proved popular. In its first three weeks it received over 16,000 calls and agreed around 6,700 time-to-pay arrangements over the phone, totalling nearly £115m. Around 2,900 cases, totalling £188m, have been referred for further consideration, and 6,500 general enquiries dealt with.
