Work has already begun on the first phase of the 20m programme, which will create 12 centres across the borough.
Four of the 12 will be new-build centres and the rest will be adaptations or refurbishments of existing buildings.
The second phase will see the construction of a further nine centres, also a mix of new-build and refurbishments. Work will begin on these centres in 2006.
Children from Dulwich Wood Nursery School visited the site of their new children's centre on 7 October to see how work was progressing (see photo).
Headteacher Elizabeth Fleetwood said, 'The children have been monitoring the progress since the old building was pulled down. We have moved off-site into temporary accommodation but the new centre should be operational by September 2006.
'Dulwich Wood Nursery School is very central within the community. It is always hard to let an old building go but it is also exciting to move on.
The nursery school will be able to serve families with under-fives more effectively in the new building.
'The new centre will have 80 full-time places for three- to five-year-olds, the same as before, but there will be an expansion in the number of places for under-threes and on the holiday schemes.'
