Boats and trains, large enough for children to climb in to and clamber over, offer great opportunities for role play and we are fortunate enough to have both in our nursery.
The boat - a real rowing boat - is a constant source of pleasure and was donated by a parent. We bedded it in concrete, bolted it in place and painted the path round about to look like the sea. The whole path was painted blue and we then added sea creatures, such as starfish, anemones and an octopus.
The following year the donor asked if the children still enjoyed using the boat. I explained we used it in storytelling and how the children used it as a pirate ship, a shop and indeed anything they could possibly imagine.
