An integrated training and qualification scheme will soon be underway after a successful pilot. Run by the National College of School Leadership, it is a crucial building block in developing integrated leadership in children's centres. More developments of this kind are essential if we are to encompass all those working with children and young people in extended schools - including childcare, study support, health and family support.
However, while developments in integrated management and leadership are clearly a priority, training and qualifications for integrated working are needed for all childcare and out-of-school workers. Although children's centres are headline news, up to 80 per cent of childcare for the under-fives will be delivered in other settings.
Similarly, while extended schools are the framework for development of out-of-school, up to 50 per cent of this provision may be delivered outside the school, or by community groups within the school.
All those working in early years and out-of-school need access to integrated training and qualifications. This will benefit children and families, open up new career progression opportunities and ensure that those working with children can link into children's centres and extended schools.
Integrated support is important for all children and young people in all settings. We must ensure that all those working with children have the support and training they need to play their part in delivering this vision.
