Warm up cold winter days, and extend learning across the curriculum, with this stimulating mini-project on blankets.

Purchase some blankets from charity shops and invite donations from parents, staff and families. Wash the blankets thoroughly and check if children have any allergies before using them.

Time for bed

Encourage the children to discuss their experience of blankets in order to approach the activities at their level of understanding.

* Ask the children what they have on their beds to keep them warm at night, and introduce new vocabulary associated with bedding.

* Show the children a sheet, pillowcase, duvet cover, quilt and blanket and explain that you have washed your bedding and need to fold it up before putting it away. Pick up each item and ask the children to name it before helping to fold it. Once all of the items have been identified, make comparisons of their texture and appearance.
