The ‘Pre-school’ classroom at New World Nursery in Washington, Tyne and Wear, will keep its name after a vote by the children that mimicked the referendum.
Children took part in their own ‘IN’ or ‘OUT’ referendum vote in order to explore the topics of democracy and free choice.
‘We are hoping to change the names of the nursery rooms in September and we wanted children to be a part of this decision – either ‘IN’ to have a new name or ‘OUT’ for the room to stay as ‘Pre-school’, linking it to school readiness,’ said nursery manager Emily Padgett.
‘Children entered our polling station, submitted their names and addresses and then voted. The session taught children to value other people’s opinions and views, as well as linking into mathematics, communication and language.’
The overall winner was ‘OUT’.
