Young people interested in joining the UK’s National Youth Choir can book an online audition from 1 April.
To join the choir, applicants should be aged 18 on 31 August 2022 to aged 22 on 31 August 2023 (to age 25 for current members).
The flagship choir of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB), who ‘want [their] choirs to represent the diversity of the UK’s young people’, NYC encourages talented young singers from all backgrounds to audition.
Young people who are currently underrepresented in choral music, including people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, disabled people, and those from lower income families, are particularly encouraged to apply.
The audition costs £20 and involves an unaccompanied and from-memory performance of the candidate’s choice of song, vocal assessment, aural and score-reading tests, and a short interview.
Successful auditionees will take part in a year-round training and performance programme, the ‘NYC Annual Programme’, which involves workshops, festivals, concerts, and performances at high-profile venues.
These opportunities are also designed to help young people gain ‘valuable real-world life and professional skills such as team-working, communication, leadership, and creativity’.
Members are expected to participate in the full NYC Annual Programme, and must re-audition at the end of each year.
This year, the online auditions are taking place from 10am to 4:30pm on 17, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 28 May, and booking for each audition closes a week before the audition date.
Financial assistance is available towards the cost of auditions or membership.
