Effective role play depends on good resources, which do not have to be expensive. When resourcing role play areas, settings need to consider the home corner, an area for thematic role play, and the outdoors.
Home corner
Does a home corner have to be in a corner? Maybe not, but there is often something deep and meaningful going on when we create an 'enclosure' for children. The need to surround ourselves with something equivalent to four walls in order to 'nest-build' is probably deeply subconscious and children will do it without adult help if they have to, setting up home corners in all sorts of incongruous places.
