Case study: Gallatown Nursery School, Kirkcaldy

An array of initiatives developed over several years ensures that children make a smooth transition from Gallatown Nursery, in Kirkcaldy, to the nearby Sinclairtown Primary School. 'From the time they enter nursery, the children experience links with the primary school,' says nursery head Marjorie Hamilton.

'From the time they enter nursery, the children experience links with the primary school,' says nursery head Marjorie Hamilton.

Throughout the year, nursery children attend displays and concerts in the primary school. Occasionally, groups will visit the nursery to put on a small display, and in their pre-school nursery year the children attend Sinclairtown's spring and summer end-of-term church services. The primary school has a noticeboard in the main cloakroom of the nursery where they display information and photographs of its staff and children, so introducing both parents and children to school activities and routines.

The nursery children are able to spot siblings or come to recognise faces in the photographs on display. The primary school's depute head, Mrs Linda Thomson, even carries out the enrolment within the nursery.
