In November, children, staff and parents from Old MacDonald's began collecting gifts to send to Diligent Bilingual School in Cameroon. Nursery children wrapped up more than 30 presents which were sent by boat to arrive in Africa in time for Christmas.

The presents included colouring books and pencils, writing pads, puzzles, games and hair bands. The children also drew pictures and wrote storybooks to send abroad.

Sarah Thomson, pre-school deputy manager at Old MacDonald's, said, 'We have been twinned with the school in Cameroon since February. The link gives our children a greater understanding of other cultures and the lives of children in different countries.

'Our children have already sent pictures and stories about their families to Cameroon. In return, we have received drawings and photos from the Cameroonian children showing the houses they live in.

'Sending the presents has helped the children appreciate that not everyone in the world will receive as much at Christmas-time as they do.'

Ms Thomson aims to strengthen the link between the two settings in the New Year. She says, 'The Diligent Bilingual School is in a very rural area, but it has one computer and we hope to start communicating with the staff in Cameroon by e-mail. We will also hold a fundraising event to raise money for new resources for the school.'
