'Commercialisation of childhood' panel set up

A Government review into the commercialisation of childhood is to be led by a professor from the Institute of Education at London University.

David Buckingham, founder and director of the Centre for Study ofChildren, Youth and Media, was appointed chair of a panel of expertsthis week. The panel is being asked by the Department for Children,Schools and Families and the Department of Culture, as part of theChildren's Plan, to examine how children's engagement with thecommercial world has changed and what impact that is having.

Professor Buckingham said, 'We are intending to look at the positiveaspects of children's involvement with the commercial world, as well asthe negatives; and at how children and parents are learning to deal withcommercial pressures.'

The panel will report back to Government by March 2009.
