Developing Language and Literacy with Young Children. By Marian R Whitehead. (Paul Chapman, 15.99, 020 7374 0645)
Reviewed by Anne O'Connor, early years consultant.
This is an excellent book. It is well-organised and deals effectively with the many issues relating to early language and literacy development.
The sections on 'Young Bilinguals' and 'Talking with Parents and Carers about Language Development' are particularly useful. They are easy to read and well documented with personal anecdotes as well as research information.
This is the book's second edition, which now outlines the impact of the Foundation Stage and the QCA curriculum guidance on the way language and literacy is taught in schools today. It confronts many of the weaknesses of, and potential damage caused by, the National Literacy Strategy.
