Downing Street hosts children's prizes

Three-year-old Hershel Simeloff was complimented on his artistic skills by Prime Minister Gordon Brown at an event at 10 Downing Street to mark this week's National Childcare Week, organised by the Daycare Trust.

Hershel was the winner of the pre-school category of a competition whichasked children to choose their favourite book - his was Owl Babies - anddesign a new front cover. He was presented with his award by KeithChapman, creator of Bob the Builder. Children's secretary Ed Balls andchildren's minister Beverley Hughes also attended.

Hershel took home a glass trophy, a 50 Early Learning Centrevoucher and a bag of autographed Roary the Racing car paraphernalia. Thecompetition was sponsored by the Children's Mutual.

Alison Garnham, joint chief-executive of the Daycare Trust, said, 'Thestandard of entries was incredibly high, so to win the award is afantastic achievement. Hershel can be very proud of his work.'
