Early intervention centre is planned

A national centre for early intervention to help young disabled children and their families is being planned by the Government with the help of a feasibility study and a series of consultations. The mental health charity Mencap organised a consultation event at Milton Keynes last month that involved 93 parents, practitioners, researchers and representatives from a range of organisations to discuss the possible shape of a centre. A report of the planning day, which will contribute to the feasibility study, has been produced by the special educational needs and disability division of the Department for Education and Skills.

Delegates concluded that the primary function of a national centre should be to develop standards or benchmarks for early interventions. Other main functions could be to deal with information and data, provide a focus for research, and influence education and training.
