It is understandable that early years practitioners can become bogged down in planning around the early learning goals and feel under pressure to concentrate on children's numeracy and literacy skills. A project on the senses is a good time to reflect on priorities, the extent to which young children learn through fun, sensory experiences and the need to give children plenty of time to explore and experiment. After all, what better way to learn than by squelching through mud and being given all the time in the world to do it. Such experiences will help children work towards the goals in a meaningful way.
