Much work has obviously gone into trying to clarify the framework, following responses from across the sector to the original EYFS consultation. The controversial learning and development grids have been removed from the framework document, though they will be included in the EYFS Practice Guidance, to leave a concise run-down of the early learning goals and assessment under the EYFS Profile. The Welfare requirements have a new format to spell out general requirements, specific requirements and guidance.

A new section called 'A Prinicpled Approach' lists four guiding themes - A Unique Child; Positive Relationships; Enabling Environments; Learning and Development - to underpin effective practice. Overall, however, the document is heavy on care and welfare, light on education, leaving much to be covered in the forthcoming Practice Guidance and Resources. One of the phonics goals which referred to blending letters in CVC words has been axed, but the much-reviled 'Hear and say sounds in words in the order in which they occur' remains - it was obviously not up for negotiation!
