Now, in the run-up to the next general election, and with the publication of the ten-year strategy for childcare set for November, it is obvious just how important an issue this is for the Government (see News, page 4).
The pledge of universal childcare for children aged three to 14 raises many questions about how this will be achieved, how it will be funded and, not least, how it will be staffed. What is happening and what should be happening will be a hugely complicated process - in political, social, economic and moral terms.
Nursery World will of course continue to inform you about everything that's going on, with news, analysis and opinion. As part of this, we're delighted to welcome a new columnist on board. Beatrix Campbell has been a journalist for many years and is well known as a social and political commentator in national newspapers and on TV and radio programmes including 'Question Time', 'Newsnight', 'Today' and 'Any Questions'. She'll be taking a provocative look at events in this sector (see page 9).
