There is no doubt that despite progress in recent years, there is still a long way to go in all sorts of areas. Two long-running campaigns for legislative change are relevant here - the call to ban smacking of children, which would do so much to improve their rights, and the pressure for a nanny register, which would both enhance children's safety and increase options for affordable childcare with tax credits.
Overall, a fundamental change in society's attitudes to children is needed, however, and this includes listening to their views. A major new study into good practice in consulting with children is the subject of our feature 'Points of view' (pages 24-25). Finding out children's opinions and wishes about their experiences should be an everyday part of working with our youngest citizens.
