The teaching unions got hot under the collar last week at the thought of Ofsted giving young children questionnaires about their schools as part of the inspection process. Yet, surely, the principle of consulting with children about the services that cater for them is a sound one, so long as it is done in an appropriate manner. There has been a lot of interest in the past few years about the best ways to consult with very young children, and our cover feature this week, 'View finders' (pages 14-15), shows how one Foundation Stage co-ordinator gathered some valuable opinions that she is using to inform her long-term planning, using cameras, conferencing, observations and questionnaires.

Asking children to portray what they like about their childcare through various creative methods has always been the impetus behind the annual children's competition Nursery World runs with Daycare Trust for National Childcare Week. This year, we are asking children to take photographs of their favourite elements of their childcare. The growing popularity of digital and disposable cameras means that everyone should be able to take part (see back page). There are some great prizes, and the winning entries will be published in Nursery World.
