EPTA UK has named Penelope Roskell as its new chair and John Thwaites as patron.

Roskell is professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the Trinity Laban in London. An active member of EPTA for over 40 years, she is a leading authority in healthy piano playing and piano advisor to the British Association of Performing Arts medicine. Her publications include The Complete Pianist, which began as a series of articles for EPTA UK’s Piano Professional magazine, and the Essential Piano Technique series.

Professor Thwaites is best known for his collaborative work with strings and as a founder member of the Primrose Piano Quartet. He is currently head of keyboard at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and course director of the Cadenza International Summer Music School. His research focus is on Brahms (historically-informed performance practice) and British Chamber Music.

New chair Roskell said: ‘This is an exciting time for EPTA, and I look forward to working with the wonderful trustees, helping to foster a strong and supportive teaching community, to welcome new members and to promote excellent teaching within the profession’.
