Family Health: Mothers' grant plans unveiled

Details of the one-off 190 grant to be offered to all pregnant women were revealed by Treasury minister Jane Kennedy at last week's annual conference of the Daycare Trust.

From April 2009 the Health in Pregnancy Grant will be available from the25th week of pregnancy for women to spend as they choose, once they havehad appropriate health advice from a midwife.

Ms Kennedy said, 'A healthy lifestyle is important in the later stagesof pregnancy, and we recognised that this is an expensive time forfamilies.'

Alison Garnham, Daycare Trust joint chief executive, welcomed the grantand said, 'We know the health of mothers during pregnancy is animportant predictor of children's outcomes.'
