Oliver Hancock has pledged to stay silence for 24 hours on Sunday (19 February) to help all those impacted by the natural disaster. Through his Just Giving page he has so far raised over £2,000.

His grandad, David Hancock, chief executive of The Nursery Family, which operates seven childcare settings, said, ‘We have been overwhelmed by the support Oliver has received, it literally brought him to tears. It’s hard for a nine-year-old boy to comprehend both the scale of the disaster and the generosity of strangers.’

He told Nursery World that his grandson had ‘taken it upon himself to hold a sponsored silence in aid of the victims of the earthquake.’ However, he said that he imagines it will be a ‘real challenge since he has a four-year-old sister who loves to invade his room.’
