Granny's recipe inspires nursery group's charity cookbook

An Edinburgh nursery chain has created a recipe book to raise money for the charity Sick Kids Foundation.
Pinocchio’s Children’s Nurseries, a chain of five settings in Edinburgh, has compiled a selection of 40 of their favourite recipes to feature in the book, which includes recipes for soups, pasta dishes and baking, along with pictures of the nursery children baking and tending to the setting’s home grown produce.

The book, More Please, also contains a secret family recipe, Ya Ya’s Greek Olive Sponge Cake, from Stratos' late grandmother, who lived to be 100 years-old.

Owners Lewissa and Stratos Koulis said they created the book to help communicate the benefits of healthy eating and home grown produce, and to demonstrate that, ‘Nutrition and fun can go hand in hand when providing children with a good old fashioned home cooked meal every day.

‘We have been asked many times by parents to create a Pinocchio’s recipe book and by doing this we’re also able to support The Sick Kids Foundation.’

The husband and wife team added, ‘Our own children love being involved in the preparation and choice of their meals. It encourages them to find out where their food comes from, and not just the local supermarket.

‘Seeing the children at our nurseries get their hands dirty planting and growing their own fruit and vegetables is fantastic. When they tuck into dishes they have grown themselves the excitement on their faces together with their feelings of achievement are priceless.’

The recipe book More Please costs £5 and is available from any of the Pinocchio’s Nurseries, www.pinocchiosnursery.co.uk, or the Sick Kids Foundation www.edinburghsickkids.org
