Small groups and few changes in routine are the watchwords for happy two-year-olds Many of the behaviours that give two-year-olds a bad reputation, such as being unco-operative, clinging or throwing temper tantrums, often arise because they are part of a group that is not designed to meet their particular needs.

Often they are part of large groups dominated by older children, where planning for the environment and play opportunities is based on Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage. This can result in inappropriate practices, such as large and prolonged 'circle times' or being sat at tables to 'concentrate' on doing worksheets, mistakenly viewed as a means to develop early literacy or numeracy skills.
