The call to action is being spearheaded by the Future Leaders Trust, a charity that develops leaders to work in challenging schools.
It has published a 20-page report – entitled Heads Up – that draws on the findings of surveys and research and includes a number of short commentaries from practising headteachers and key figures in education discussing how we can tackle the leadership shortage.
Among the quoted survey statistics, the report warns that:
Other barriers highlighted by research and discussed in the report include a reluctance among female or Black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers to apply for positions because of fears of bias in the selection process.
