The results of the survey were released to mark World Book Day today (Thursday, March 3), when thousands of schools up and down the country will be running a host of book-related events as well as getting pupils to dress up as literary characters.
The poll revealed that six of the top 10 heroes and heroines in children’s literature were female, including Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.
Meanwhile, seven out of the top 10 most evil villains were female, including Dolores Umbridge and Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter, Cruella de Vil from The Hundred and One Dalmatians and The White Witch from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
