Higher evaluation is urged for Montessori

The Montessori Schools Association is urging all of its schools to go through the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation (MEAB) scheme.

The MEAB was introduced in 2008 to ensure that schools using the Montessori name deliver consistently high levels of care.

So far, 47 Montessori schools have received MEAB accreditation.

Phillip Bujak, chief executive of Montessori St Nicholas, said, 'To have one unified gold standard for all our schools must be our aim in the MSA so that we can speak with confidence about standards in our schools.'

Accredited settings carry the National Kite Mark and their listing on the MSA Schools list includes the MEAB logo with a link to their accreditation report. They also receive a plaque to display in their setting.

A ceremony to present the MEAB awards was held last month at the Institute of Education in London.

One of the schools that received the award was Pocklington Montessori in East Riding, Yorkshire.

The setting was established in 1992 and is the only Montessori school in the area. It also offers Montessori methodology teacher training.

Pocklington will be building on its success by introducing the Key Stage 2 curriculum from September this year.

Tracy Slack, principal of Pocklington Montessori, said, 'While Pocklington Montessori has always been committed to offering the highest level of Montessori provision, parents can now be reassured that our practice has been recognised on a national platform.

'This new scheme is great news for genuine Montessori providers, as it gives official verification and reassurance to parents that the school or nursery in question is teaching with authentic Montessori techniques.'
